Sleigh the Holidays with These Styling Tips
That time of year is here again – holiday party time! So, let me tell you a story real quick before I get to the crux of this stylish newsletter. I attended a party with my wife. We looked fantastic -- all dressed up & excited. And then I noticed something very interesting -- the women looked epic, but the men looked terrible!
Half of the guys
looked like they were going to a bar to grab a beer and the other half looked like they just came from work. I thought to myself, “What are you doing, men!? This is an incredible opportunity!” So as a result, I’m covering the top party style tips to look epic, just like the ladies do.
Before you decide on WHAT to wear, a couple of things will help develop the outfit that
you're will be rocking. You need to know WHERE it's going to be held as well as WHO is going to be there. If the party or event is going to be held at a super fancy place, you’ll need to dress super fancy instead of how you would dress if the event was in a high school gymnasium. Also, if it's going to be a bunch of single people with some mixing-and-mingling where you could meet a spicy senorita, you would dress differently than if the party is a work
event.
Once you know
the location and who will be in attendance, move on to the next pre-party dress planning step, which is to plan in advance. The motto I live by is that planning prevents poor party dress. You do not want to wing it. It's not like, "Oh, I'm going to a party tonight, and I'll just figure it out then." Noooooo. Plan it in advance so you know you'll be absolutely killing it.
Be overdressed, but not in the sense of
wearing a tuxedo to a casual event. What I am referring to is: once you know who's going to be there and the level of dress (if dudes are going to be super casual, for example), take your dress one step above everybody else at the party.
Also, buy something new. When you buy a new piece, you will feel great and know you look killer. Instead of wearing all the same
stuff that everybody's seen you in, this is the perfect opportunity to go shopping and treat yourself. Maybe it's a new pair of shoes or something as simple as a new pair of socks.
Experiment and have fun with your style. Parties are the perfect opportunity to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. The cool thing about meeting people for the first time at a party is they don't have a preconceived notion of you or your style. It's a perfect
opportunity to experiment and play around. Wear something a little bit more daring than you would usually.
Layer your clothing as it's an incredible way to add depth and dimension to your outfit. Everybody else will be wearing their
button-up shirts tucked into their pants, slacks, or jeans. Then there’s you -- rocking a tee shirt with a cool cardigan or maybe a collared shirt with a v-neck. Remember, holiday parties are opportune for donning a sports coat or blazer. The bottom line is parties are a great way to add depth and dimension through layering.
My last tip (but not least!) is to remember the importance of outerwear. Your style is not just about the outfit you wear while
the party goes on. The arrival and departure are also times when your style is noticed, and I would hate for you to totally screw the style-pooch by wearing a dynamite outfit with a super casual piece on top.
Invest in an incredible jacket. If you're looking for the best jacket, I would invest in a super sweet peacoat. Peacoats are the best party jackets ever because
they can be dressed up or down, you can wear them with jeans or slacks, and you always look like a badass.
I also
want to mention three critical points that will knock your experience out of the party park. Bring a gift for the host. Never show up anywhere empty-handed. Bring a bottle of wine, bring a plant. Just bring something. Another critical point is: do not overindulge when attending. Have fun and a few drinks but don't get sloppy drunk. You hear about people who do stupid things at parties, and I don't want that
person to be you!
The last point is the most important of all—never (EVER!) drink and drive. Make sure that you have Uber or Lyft installed on your phone. Guys, holiday parties are super festive fun. Make sure you do your part and dress amazingly!
