Hire a PRO or DIY? Be safe versus take risks? Let's break it down.
Should you call in a PRO versus DIY?
Would you call in a pro to refinish your two car garage (around $2,500) or do it yourself for around $250? I'm talking sanding, crack repairs, adhesive base, flakes, shave & vacuum flakes, and then clear coat. You can save
literally thousands to do it yourself -- but should you? My neighbor did it himself, and his garage turned out brilliantly! Another paid for a professional company to save the time and effort, and I honestly can't tell the difference.
So, let’s talk about something we all wrestle with: when to call in the pros, and when to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself. Whether it’s fixing your car,
tackling a home project, or even dealing with personal stuff like fitness or mental health, it’s easy to think we can handle everything on our own. But sometimes, that “I got this” attitude can end up costing you way more time, money, and energy than you bargained for.
Let’s start with your home. I’m all for being
handy — changing light fixtures, painting walls, or doing a little weekend landscaping? Heck yeah, grab your tools and go for it. But if you’re dealing with electrical work, plumbing, or anything structural, listen to me carefully: that’s a job for a pro. You might think you’re saving money, but if something goes wrong, it could cost you thousands to fix… not to mention put your safety at risk.
The key is to
know your limits. There’s no shame in saying, “This is out of my league.” Real strength comes from self-awareness — not pretending to know it all. You don’t need to prove your masculinity by rewiring your house. Pro tip: focus on the projects you can learn safely, and call the experts for the ones that could burn your house down.
Now, let’s shift gears — literally — to your car. Changing your oil? Easy. Replacing air filters, wipers, or headlights? Totally doable. But when you start hearing weird grinding noises, your transmission’s acting up, or your check engine light’s flashing like a disco ball, it’s time to head to a mechanic. Cars are complex machines, and one wrong move could take your ride off the road for good.
That said, it’s still smart to learn basic car care. You don’t need to be a gearhead, but understanding how your car works builds confidence and saves you money on the small stuff. Plus, there’s something powerful about being self-reliant — just don’t let pride get in the way of good judgment.
Now here’s where things get a little deeper — your personal life.
Whether it’s your fitness, relationships, or mental health, this is an area where a lot of guys try to “DIY” it all. We think asking for help makes us weak. But truth bomb: the strongest men are the ones who know when to seek help.
Let’s take fitness. You can 100% get in shape on your own — there’s no question. There are YouTube videos, apps, and free routines
everywhere. But if you’ve been spinning your wheels for months and not seeing results, a personal trainer or coach can save you years of frustration. The proper guidance can skyrocket your progress.
Same goes for mental health. Life gets heavy sometimes — stress, anxiety, burnout, relationship problems, whatever it is. And while journaling, meditating, or exercising can help a lot, there are moments when talking to a therapist or counselor is the most brilliant move you can make. It’s not about being broken; it’s about being proactive and taking charge of your mind just like you do your
body.
Even when it comes to relationships — friendships, dating, or family — sometimes an outside perspective can help you see things you can’t from the inside. A coach, counselor, or mentor can give you clarity and help you make better decisions. Don’t underestimate the power of a neutral, experienced viewpoint.
Here’s the deal: doing things yourself builds
confidence, skill, and pride. It teaches you to take ownership. But calling in the pros doesn’t make you less capable — it makes you strategic. The most successful men I know know when to delegate and when to dive in. That’s efficiency, not weakness.
Before every challenge, ask yourself three questions:
Do I have the skills and tools to do this safely and effectively?
Is my time better spent learning or hiring someone who already knows?
What’s the risk if I screw this
up?
If the risk is high or the problem is beyond your comfort zone — call in the pro. If not, take it on, learn, and grow.
At the end of the day, being a man isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about
being resourceful, humble, and wise enough to know when to ask for help. Whether it’s your home, your car, or your life — some things are meant to be handled by your hands, and others by someone with the right expertise. The goal isn’t to do it all. The goal is to do it right.
