I have been working on a new business, and I wasn't going to talk about it until later... but one thing that I have learned from this Covid-19 situation is that plans change. I just found out that my newest project has been shut-down after I had been working on it for the last 8-months. It’s on-hold for now, at a stand-still.
I had been thinking about this new business for about 2-years and finding the right spot was the #1 priority. I knew it was going to be expensive so I budgeted and prepared for it. Unfortunately at this time, we've had to shut down the renovations which sucks as the business opening will be delayed. So I thought I'd tell you a little bit about it.
I love old buildings, which I saw this old church when out running. I’d peek in and dream of what I could do with it. Well, I ended up buying the old church, and it’s a perfect fit for this new business.
Built in 1848, it’s approximately 4,000 square feet with super high ceilings (see me in the image below?!?!). The building was a complete disaster when I purchased it -- with ugly plaster, spray paint all over the place, vines coming in the windows, and water damage. You could tell that nobody had loved the building for a super long time. So I knew that I was going to have to spend a lot of money and give it a lot of TLC.
Ugly doesn’t scare me and neither does hard work. Experts told me that whatever the estimated cost is to multiply it by two. Obviously, I expected this project to be very expensive which it has been up to this point. For starters, lead remediation was performed to remove all of the lead in the plaster, and the walls were all stripped to expose brick. I'm also planning to restore some of the
altered features to their original state.
The building is part of the Historic Registry which I actually had to appear before the historic board of the city and pitch the business idea which included sharing renderings and describing the plans. They informed me that I have to keep the building in the spirit of what it was originally which means that I'm not allowed to add wings or anything to the outside.
Currently the building looks like a big gray building, but I'm going to smooth out the stucco, paint it white, and give it really cool industrial iron windows and a front door.
In regard to the inside, a mezzanine will be built as well as a second story (like a loft) where people can hang-out and see what's going on below. Offices and bathrooms will also be built as well as space for storage.
What exactly is this business? I will definitely tell you more later as I don't want to ruin the surprise of the secret. But I wanted to
start talking about it now as I'd like to document the process & progress as well as have a BIG reveal. I'm going to be super proud when it's all finished-- the fact that I took this old amazing building and gave it a new life that it deserved.
So what do you think this business is going to be? Some people have responded: a gym, coffee shop, Alpha M. Headquarters, Academy for Men’s Self-Improvement, men's club, restaurant, men’s fashion mall, men's clothing + hair salon combination, Alpha Speed Dating Course… and my favorite response, Uncle Barry's Cat Emporium.
