Welcome to the 2nd round of Spot the Fashion Mistake! See the pictures below? What do you think the problem is?
So the other night I was watching Jeopardy and a contestant on the show almost caused me to spit out my drink. The style mistake is one of my biggest pet peeves -- so horrendous! This contestant may be racking up the intellectual points, but I am certainly racking up the style & personal presentation points. And I guess it's my own way of feeling a little bit better, because those
contestants are my intellectual superiors. Anyway, let's not keep you waiting any longer.
Jimmy, at the end, is the offender. Why in the world would he let his collar pop outside of his sweater like that? He's a good looking guy, and he could actually have a little something going on. Instead he opted for this horrible look where his collar is popping out and laying down. If he tucked his collar in, he would look 100% better stylistically.
So, what is the best way to wear your collar? The most stylish way is if you let it fall naturally inside.Â
If you want to look professional, make sure all but the top button is done up.Â
If you're wearing a round neck sweater, it looks better if your collar is tucked in.Â
And if you're wearing a cardigan, it looks best with a tie.Â
Also, if you're wearing a half zip sweater, keep the collar inside.
In addition to how you wear your collar (where it lands), you should also pay attention to how rigid it is whether wearing a casual or dress shirt.
You could wear a collar stay which is made of many different materials, most often being plastic. Replace the plastic with a higher quality material that is more rigid so it doesn’t bend or break. Also be sure to remove it during the cleaning
process.
Another alternative is the magnetic collar stay which is effective if the shirt has removable collar stays. If not, they’re problematic.Â
You could also easily use fabric glue dots which are quick and easy but not reusable.
Watch out for polo collars that end up all wonky and wacked after a few washes by avoiding those shirts made from piqued cotton. Tasso Elba (Macy’s), Banana Republic, and Ministry of Supply are my picks.
So back to Jimmy -- I couldn't take my eyes off this mistake. My eyes were burning! I ended up having to change the channel it was too painful for me to look at. I know I'm a little bit dramatic, but even if he won in the game of Jeopardy, I feel as if he lost in the game of style.
If you're wearing a collared shirt with a sweater or a jacket, tuck that collar in.
