Let's play a quick game and see if you can spot the fashion mistake.
See this picture below -- what do you think the problem is?
This picture is a prime example of a guy who's put together. He's looking good, and he's looking sharp. His jeans are nice, his shoes are great, and even his shirt is looking dynamite.
Â
So what's the style mistake? The mistake is that the shirt is a good 6-in too long. If you recall my video about untucked shirt zones, you should know a little something about this guy’s shirt. If you need a refresher, here’s an oldie but goodie: https://iamalpham.com/shirt-length-when-untucked/
Let’s break this style mistake down. First, the shirt is covering his butt -- and not only that, it goes 4-in below his butt. He looks like he's wearing a dress! That shirt should be tucked in, and if he would tuck it in, he would look a lot better. The problem with wearing extra long shirts that are a bit fitted (especially with little bit of a belly) is that the shirt will make you
look like a sausage. Referring to the same fitted shirt: shorten it. The result would be less cinching around the midsection.
Take this a step further, and unbutton the last button. The guy in the picture has his shirt buttoned all the way down causing greater cinching. Once this guy gets his shirt into Zone 3, he should leave the bottom button unbuttoned. It won't flail open and expose everything. Rather, it will allow the shirt to gradually open so when he moves, the shirt will move more casually and comfortably.
Think of it like a vent in the back of jackets which allows a jacket to move. A jacket without a vent cinches a bit -- same goes for a button up shirt left untucked.
I’d like to discuss the untucked zones in regard to other shirts as well. Tee-shirts should go no longer than Zone 2. If the tee is in Zone 1, it’s on the verge of being a bit too short when you bend over. The top of your pants, or even worse your underwear, will be seen. Either way that's not good. If the tee-shirt is longer than Zone 2, it's getting a bit too long. By the
time it hits Zone 4, it definitely looks like a dress.
Standard dress shirts should come down past Zone 4 so when you tuck it in you can sit and move and it doesn't untuck. But if you want to wear that button up untucked, this standard dress shirt is not a good option.
Opt instead for a casual button up shirt that is meant and intended to be worn out. It should fall no lower than Zone 3. If it gets below Zone 3, it's going to be a bit too long due to covering your crotch. But you can get it altered in order to wear it tucked in.
Make sure when you're wearing a shirt untucked it's the right length and consider unbuttoning the bottom button. The shirt won't cinch, bunch, or get
caught on your belt or pants. And you look cool and casual!
