Welcome to the 4th round of Spot the Fashion Mistake, where one topic takes on TWO different style mistakes!
The FIRST Style Mistake involves Chris Brown during the Grammy’s. He was in the spotlight and going about his business when I spotted the style mistake! It was glaringly obvious and front-and-center. Do you see it?
He had not removed the brand tag from his sleeve – what a rookie mistake! This goes to show ya that money, fame, and success do not buy class and knowledge (which both are free). I also find it interesting that none of his entourage or friends accompanying him knew enough to advise him to remove the offending tag.
When removing the brand tag, be super careful as the stitching can be very tight. You may need to take it to a tailor if you are not confident removing it because it is better to be safe than to have a costly repair to take care of.
The SECOND Style Mistake is from a wedding I attended. Before the pandemic, I attended my cousin’s wedding. It was a beautiful event – the bride was gorgeous. But I found a style mistake an attendee made that relates to Chris Brown’s faux pas. My aunt’s brother has always been a reasonably good dresser, and when he walked up, I was not disappointed. He was in a sharp, great-fitting gray suit
with coordinating shoes. He shook hands, and then he proceeded to sit in front of me. At one part of the service, everyone stood up, and that is when I spotted ... the X of death.
I don’t want you to make the same mistake. Every new suit jacket with a vent has a cross-stitch to keep the vent closed and prevent wrinkling during the shipping process. The vent allows your butt proper space when walking and sitting. Without the cross-stitch removed, the jacket will look awkward, and the wearer will look like an amateur.
So now you know -- before you wear it, remove that stitch by simply breaking on one of the large strands with blunt scissors. Once you do, locate both ends and pull out. Failure to remove the cross-stitch will result in a style mistake – the X of death! You have been warned!
Â
To complete the new suit prep, two more steps are
imperative
Remove the shoulder stitching – this white basting stitch can be simply pulled off. If threads remain, look for the knot and pull for the rest of the thread. Avoid using scissors.
Cut the pocket threads – to use the pockets, remove the threads. Your finger can easily be pushed into the pocket’s corner space to tug the threads, which should come out easily to open up the pocket. Don’t use scissors.
Â
There you go! Unpicking the stitching, as detailed above, is a must. If you are nervous about undertaking these four steps yourself, you can also take your suit to a tailor to have them do it. And as you will see, even the rich and famous are immune to the ignorance surrounding how to prep before you wear.
If you take on the task yourself, it shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes, and you’ll be wearing your new suit like a badass pro!
