On the show 'Seinfeld', George Costanza had a wallet so monstrously huge that it caused him to sit on an incline and start to get back problems. His
wallet grows larger and larger until it bursts at the seams when he tries to put one last receipt in it. Exploding in a shower of business cards, receipts, coupons, and everything else he holds dear, it was holding everything BUT money!
This Seinfeld episode is the inspiration for today's newsletter: men's wallets. Men need to think of their wallets as an accessory. While the wallet is rarely seen, as an image-conscious alpha male, little things set you apart from the masses of men who don't pay attention to the details. The wallet is one of those details, and 99% of us carry some form of wallet to carry ID cards, insurance cards, credit
cards, cash, membership cards, discount cards, and receipts. Basically, your wallet ends up looking like a filing cabinet wrapped in leather where you systematically file things and then jam it into your pants.
Let me tell you, something gentleman, wherever you are when you have to pull out your wallet, let's say Starbucks, you will not impress the cute barista or any other sexy senorita pulling out a big mother of a wallet. This look is lazy, irresponsible, and disheveled. Carrying a monstrous wallet is not sexy, and we can do
better.
Back Pocket
Options
Different options are available for carrying your cards and cash. I'm first going over options that will go in your back pocket or inside your coat pocket. The first common kind is the bifold wallet. It's a simple design where you put your money in one place and your credit cards into the slot along with a simple ID. The classic black or brown bi-fold wallet is the most widely used out there,
but popularity doesn't mean you have to opt for this design.
The tri-fold wallet is very similar to the bifold, except one extra fold makes the square slightly smaller than the bifold. That extra flap does have a tendency to make this wallet a bit bulkier and a bit thicker. That being said, make sure that you don't overload it with additional cards and
receipts.
The coat wallet was designed to be carried inside the pocket of your coat or jacket. The construction is a bit lengthier and rectangular. When you open it up, multiple slots are available for credit cards and IDs. You don't want to carry this wallet in your back pocket as it will stick out, making it an easy target for
pickpocketers.
The chain wallet became popular back in the 1970s by bikers, more specifically the Hells Angels. The chain wallet is typically a trifold wallet where a chain goes onto your belt or belt loop and is attached with a snap. Nobody's stealing this wallet from you. This look is very casual, and you can express your individual style with different
chains.
I carry this front wallet from Anson Calder. I just love the tan color, and I love that it's minimal. The design has two sleeves and a little area in the center for cash.
I can fan my cards and select which one I want, leaving the rest in place. This particular wallet fits really well in my front pocket as it's slim, not too big and bulky.
Front Pocket
Options
As far as your front pocket options, the money clip is a standard version that keeps your bills together. Many cool options of money clips are available with various designs and details. Another front pocket option is the credit card carrying case, perfect for carrying IDs and credit cards. The only issue with this option is carrying and accessing cash as access is cumbersome compared to the money clip or a
regular wallet.
So one day, Mr. Money Clip was in the bar getting drunk, and in walks Ms. Credit Card Holder. She was looking fine, and the two of them start having drinks. They end up in the bathroom where they created one of the most incredible inventions ever: the money clip credit card holder. This option is a union of two great features into one effective design.
The size of your wallet is not your only wallet concern. I should also mention that you do not want to be carrying a worn-out wallet either. Over time, wallets can start looking like hell with the stitching coming apart and the wallet taking the shape of how you sit on it. Once it has evidence of wear-and-tear, replace your wallet.
Take the Wallet
Quiz
So right now, I want you to reach in your pocket and pull out your wallet.
Does it look fat, big, and overflowing with receipts and cards and cash? Do you need to thin it out? Here's how. Limit the credit cards you carry to the one you use most frequently. Then, stick the rest in a safe drawer, lock them up in a safe, or freeze them in a baggy of water. Next, take out all of the business cards and receipts. Have a designated place in your home for them. Your wallet will be a little bit more thin & presentable even at this point once these items have
been removed.
Also, while looking at your wallet, is it scuffed up and looking kind of rough? If so, it's probably time to invest in a new one. The great news is wallets are not that expensive. Sure, you can spend a lot of money on a high-end designer wallet, but you can find stylish, sleek, and sexy options between $15 to $30. That's not going to break the bank, and you will have boosted your style
game.
To take your style game to the next level, rotate using multiple wallets. I have a black one for when I'm wearing black shoes and a brown one for I'm wearing brown shoes. If you really want to get into that much detail, you will undoubtedly be set apart from the masses.
Don't carry around a massive messy wallet that makes you look cluttered and unorganized. You need to carry a clean and concise wallet that makes you
look put together and sharp. It's simple things that make a big difference.
