As you should know by now, my personal favorite time of year in terms of men’s style and fashion are fall & winter. Eventually, however, the warmer weather of spring comes along, and wardrobes have to shift for warm weather, or else you’ll sweat your ass off and look ridiculous. With that said, I am going over some warm weather essentials to get you off on the right foot for the warm weather months ahead.
We'll start at the feet. Sexy summer footwear boils down to
the Holy Trinity: a simple pair of leather flip-flops, a pair of cool casual sneakers or tennis shoes, and a great pair of leather driving mocs, loafers, or (if you must) boat shoes.
All flip-flops are not created equal. The flip-flops that I'm talking about are very simple and subtle black or brown leather flip-flops. There are not the giant, bulky, strappy, monstrous, snowshoe-like flip-flops that you see so many dudes wearing. The ones I am talking about work with shorts, casual pants, and jeans.
A cool pair of fashion sneakers are perfect to go hanging-out around at the park, riding a bike, or walking the dog. I dig Pumas, Chuck Taylors, and ASICS, which all work with shorts, casual cotton pants, and jeans.
You also need a simple pair of leather slip-on shoes, the driving moc or loafer, an outstanding option to throw-on with shorts, pants, or jeans. You always hear about people dressing up a pair of shorts or jeans, and the loafer is the way to do it.
Alright, now we're going to discuss shorts. A great pair of
FITTED flat-front grey shorts is the start (aka city shorts). Then you will also need a pair of khaki shorts because there's nothing simpler or sexier than a white shirt with a pair of fitted, flat-front khaki shorts and a simple pair of flip-flops, driving mocs, or even sneakers. I'm telling you, it's a great look. Also, grab yourself a pair of cut-off fitted jeans shorts or cut-off khakis/chinos – they’re like the bad boy of shorts.
So you keep hearing me talk about fitted shorts – stores like J. Crew, Banana Republic, and the GAP have options that are a bit more tailored and fitted through the thigh. Baggy shorts will make you look dumpy, your calves look horrible, and your legs like sticks. Concerning the length, go with what is comfortable but not super long or super
short.
Your warm-weather shirts should include a white v-neck tee shirt. And if you’re not comfortable with a v-neck, you can opt for a crew neck. Either way, a basic white tee shirt is a perfect option that matches everything. Keep an eye out for yellow pits, though, because after time they tend to build-up. Check out the video link I included below. Other tee shirt colors to grab this season are gray, blue, and black – keep in mind, the black
tee is the bad boy of v-necks. It’s plain, simple, and works with everything.
Also, go with a retro-inspired vintage tee as well as a fitted white collared button-up shirt. Double pockets will prevent your nipples from showing through even when sweating, and this shirt works great with both shorts and pants. You can’t go wrong.
Accessorize with fun fabric belts, bracelets, and other options such as
straw hats – mix-and-match to incorporate these options. You can make the perfect outfit for every warm-weather situation.
