I want to ask you a question. Are you currently bored at work? Do you feel there’s something better out there for you, but for some reason, you can’t quite get it into gear to take action? Instead, you go to your uninspiring job, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. If so, you are in a rut, and it might be time to make that move.
Life is way too short to be miserable 8 – 12 hours a day at work. You need to make some changes, but in order to take action, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable to make the change. Here are some tips to make those changes and kick start obtaining that dream job.
The most important part of the process is to prepare your mind. When we get into ruts, no matter the type, we let ourselves wear thin, feel our value depreciate, and don’t feel as confident. So, you need to realize that you are (1) a success as well as (2) a valuable commodity. You need to condition your mind to acknowledge that you ARE a valuable asset.
Also, finding a new career is not a quick fix. It will take some time – especially with more drastic changes. One critical point is to keep your mind focused and in a good space. Here’s what I do: I go out and volunteer. Volunteering always works for me. I realize it has nothing to do with your new career, but it has everything to do with feeling good about yourself.
During this time, you should up your grooming game. Get a haircut, take care of your skin, get a great pair of new shoes, take some key pieces of your wardrobe to the tailor for a better fit, and spruce up what you have. You need to put forth the best personal package you possibly can – from your mind to your shoes.
At this point, you’re feeling good and looking good. Now it’s time to analyze your past jobs and your current job and your past job-hunting effectiveness. If you have been unemployed for a while and you’ve been hunting high-and-low, you need to reevaluate your efforts. Figure out a better way to go about hunting for that new job.
With closer evaluation, you may realize you hate what you’re doing or have done in the past, but you have no idea what you want to do. A suggestion is to take a career aptitude test. Search Google to discover multitudes of these tests that you can take for free. Professionals designed career aptitude tests after valid & credible research studies so that the results will provide rich insights to guide you to a better career fit. In other words, career aptitude
tests are a great way to discover what you have a propensity for.
Before adjusting your resume, you may want to think about getting some more education, certifications, or schooling. If you’re totally changing careers, you definitely need some training. This education and/or certification will set you apart from other applicants and is something else to stick into your superhero belt.
Speaking of your resume, how long has it been since you pulled yours out? It’s time to
freshen up that bad boy. Approximately 95% of people exaggerate slightly to moderately on their resume. Lying is NOT a good idea, BUT neither is selling yourself short. It’s no time to be modest. Make sure to include lots of data if you can – numbers speak.
After you have revised your resume, make sure to have someone else look over it. Sure, you can have a friend or family member review it, but I highly recommend taking it to a professional resume writer. These experts can improve your resume to give you a better chance of success when applying. Invest in yourself and your future by having an expert boost your resume – it will pay off in the long run.
Remember, a job is not going to fall into your lap. After you have your killer resume, post it online. Also, contact job placement agencies and headhunters where their job is to find you employment. Networking is also an effective method, which LinkedIn is a great online resource. You can also let people know on social media that you’re hunting. Reach out to friends, but be cautious about cluing in coworkers and
bosses. Send private messages, for example.
Well, as you can see, job searching is like a job in itself. You can’t do it once and expect to reap the rewards. Stay focused and disciplined to make it happen. You are never too old to start a new career, but you need to be smart about it. If you’re 47 with a family of 5, you cannot quit your job to be a balloon-animal-making clown. You have to think about the financial
security of your family. Bottom line – life is way too short to be miserable. Make that change!
