I could publish an earth-shattering piece with one-of-a-kind, valuable information that is engaging, enriching, and enjoyable, all packed into one video. Everyone *should* like this video, right? Well, I will undoubtedly get a slew of comments about how 'stupid' the video is and how 'gay' I am. Why does this happen? More importantly, what the hell is going on with
society?
Being on the internet gives the user a layer of so-called 'protection,' shielding them from looking anyone in the eyes or saying rude things in front of them. Communication is less filtered as well, resulting in keyboard warriors.
Being online can also offer anonymity, which is a very strong liberator. All kinds of hell can break loose with that veil of anonymity and the feeling of being free from responsibilities. Tracking and tracing actions is difficult (if not impossible), which causes people sometimes to run wild and say things they would never have in real life. Fear disappears, and human nature shows its darkest and worst side.
The internet also combines cultures, countries, and different people from different walks of life. Users may lack awareness of other people's ways of life, resulting in spouting off hateful nonsense. All of this, stems from arguably one of the biggest root evil of all, ignorance.
So, we have the protection of the Internet in general, the use of anonymity online, and plain ole ignorance fueling toxic, vicious, and aggressive users online. But what it all boils down to is a lack of a character, because anyone with good character wouldn't change who they are just because the conditions between real life and online life are different. Character is what is lacking
in society these days -- not the fact we are online.
A man's character is a combination of features and qualities that distinguish him from everybody else around him. Now, he may be the best-looking guy in town, he might have the best hair or the best clothes, he might really give off a great first impression by looking at people and shaking their hand, but if his character is lacking or he is a jerk, he's just become the UGLIEST person in the room.
Anyone with money can go out and buy a great pair of pants or shoes or jeans or get a good haircut and then look put together. Those things are ARE NOT truly impressive – what IS TRULY impressive is his character which will be his LEGACY in life. People are going to remember his character. Was he funny, or did he make fun of people? Was he kind, considerate, and thoughtful, or was he selfish
and self-centered?
How is character derived? How is it developed and honed? One of the key aspects of character is … you know it… drum roll, please… CONFIDENCE. Your character will improve the more confident you get, which is the #1 reason why I publish YouTube videos. I want men to feel great about themselves. BUT there’s a big difference between the confident guy and the cocky guy. Confidence is sexy, and cocky guys look like tools.
The COCKY (aka arrogant) guy is somebody who’s always posturing and putting others down, thinking that he’s better than other people. He’s not the confident guy, and he needs to tear others down to make themselves feel
better.
The CONFIDENT guy has a good sense of self; he knows nothing will discourage him or make him feel less secure. He doesn’t need to posture for anybody or put others down to build himself up. He knows who he is, and he’s alright with
it.
People who have to tear you down are not worth any of your time. They are worthless and pathetic if they feel good by tearing you down and telling you something destructive (rather than constructive). Further, they enjoy getting a rise out of you and want you to retaliate as this gives them more energy and power.
I have destructive and negative people who lack character commenting on my videos. I could have the most perfect video ever made – where millions of people are helped Everyone should like this video, right? Well, I will undoubtedly get comments about how stupid the video is and how gay I am. I ignore the haters and don’t give them
power.
This point brings up another important observation – this is the 21st century, and having comments thrown out there calling me (or anyone else for that matter) ‘gay’ is ridiculous. Where you or I put our private parts or who I like to kiss makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE about my character (or anyone else for that matter). I don't care if you're gay, straight, from whatever country, political party, or religion
– the insults have to STOP.
Be like Teflon and also have confidence, a great sense of self, and a great character. Do not sink to any low levels or retaliate. I know it’s tempting to call someone a ‘douche’ and get into a sparring match, but be true to yourself and don’t sink to the hater's level.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT – I want you to figure out what type of person you are and your character. Throughout the coming week, pay attention to how you handle yourself, how you handle other people, and how you handle adversity. What will be your legacy?
